Did you know that Vacation Bible School dates back to the 1890’s? That’s right! With many children in urban areas not needed to harvest family crops, a doctor’s wife in New York City wanted to find a way to keep children off the streets in the summertime. It was a way to spread the gospel and evangelize.
Each summer, Mr. Steve Youngs, the director of the music program and religious education for the parish of St. Rose of Lima, develops an energized program based around a chosen theme. This past August, Mr. Youngs focused his program and the story of Jacob and Esau found in the Book of Genesis. Through music, crafts, and creative discovery, the students learned the story and how to relate it to their lives here and now.
The culmination of the week was a skit performed by the children that portrayed the details of the story. The children discovered God in a creative way.
