Kindergarten Readiness Indicators

Academic:  Able to hold a pencil
                  Able to recognize and write first name 
                  Name at least 30 letters in upper or lower case
                  Know at least 9 letter sounds
                  Able to write, count, and identify numbers 0-10
                  Knowledge of basic colors and shapes
                  Identify parts of a book: cover, pages, picture, text
                  Know that we read from left to right
Social/Emotional:  Can follow 2-step directions
                              Can work independently and stay on task
                              Can organize self, materials, and belongings
                              Respect adults, peers, school property
                              Take risks to attempt new tasks
                              Listen attentively
 How to help children prepare: Read books daily with your child
                                                  Play games to practice winning, losing, taking turns
                                                  Eliminate afternoon naps
                                                  Talk about school
                                                  Teach your child to tie shoes
                                                  Practice being independent
